Salas, PaulThe Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival Association has a new president.

Paul Salas was installed as president of the MLFA on Feb. 17 to replace Jeanmarie Trapp. This is his first term as president.

Trapp resigned after serving as president for a year and a half so she can refocus her efforts on her career.

The other elected officers are Joe Marine, vice president; Marilyn Langdon, treasurer;

Emily Vanderwielen, secretary; and directors Kenn Dickenson, Christopher Summitt, John Grosso, Dawn Anderson, Julie Martin, Jan Straub, Gary Lockert and Marvella Black. Salas is a former director.

When the executive director was fired months before last year’s event, Trapp put her career on hold to save the 50th Lighthouse Festival. With “some loose ends” that needed to have been tied up sooner, the festival was almost canceled.

As a real estate broker, executive director of a nonprofit organization and CEO of three businesses, Trapp realized that she can’t afford to serve a second year as president.

“She’s super busy,” Marine said. “We’re all amazed she put in as much time as she did with the festival last year. She had to take something off of her plate.”

Salas has been a Mukilteo resident for eight years and a festival association member for two years. He served as president of the Mukilteo Kiwanis Club two years in a row.

“It’s a huge honor for me,” he said. “It’s humbling that my peers in the community have this regard for me to be able to lead them in such a huge event. I’m pretty excited about the opportunity.”

His goals as president of the association are threefold: to grow its membership, grow its partnerships with local organizations, and to grow its attendance to the three-day event.

“This festival unites the members of the community,” Salas said. “This is the one time a year that everyone gets together to appreciate and celebrate the city.”

Salas works as a student adviser for Pima Medical Institute of Seattle. He’s been meeting with students and helping them with educational planning for nine years.

He also is a member of the Mukilteo Kiwanis Club and the Mukilteo Schools Foundation.

Though Marine was in line to serve as president, he has maintained his role as vice president because he won’t be at this year’s festival. His daughter is getting married that same weekend.

“It was either be here for the festival or walk my daughter down the aisle,” Marine said. “I will do all of my work leading up to the festival, but we thought it best that I continue to serve as VP.”

Marine said the MLFA won’t be hiring an executive director for this year’s festival because the association has had to fire its last two. He said it’s better to have the officers divide up the work.

“That just hasn’t worked all that much for us,” he said. “It’s hard to bring someone in from out of town and bring them up to speed.”

The Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival Association organizes Mukilteo’s annual waterfront festival.

This year’s Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival is set for Sept. 9-11. The event, now in its 51st year, kicks off with the Run-A-Muk 5K and 10K on Aug. 27.

The MLFA meets at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at the Chamber of Commerce, 4902 76th St. S.W., Mukilteo. For more information, visit www.mukfest.com or 425-353-5516.
